BJP Launches NaMo TV To Capture The Colors Of Elections

namo tvAs the elections are just around the corner, Bhartiya Janta Party launches a TV Channel called NaMo TV with the aim to provide real-time coverage for PM Modi’s campaigns for the General Elections 2019. The channel has been named after our current Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

BJP tweeted about the new channel and wrote, “Capture the colours of elections… Watch the dance of democracy…Say NaMo again with NaMo TV.”

PM Modi too took to Twitter to invite people to tune in to the channel to get first-hand information about his government. The channel airs Prime Minister Narendra Modi election speeches every day and showcases various policy initiatives taken by him. It will Live telecast his rallies. The logo of the channel is made of PM Modi’s picture and the initials of his name. This new channel is being hosted by all DTH platforms.

The channel will also telecast PM Modi’s Sunday event ‘Mai Bhi Chowkidar’. PM Modi announced on Twitter, “The day we were most looking forward to is here! At 5 PM, lakhs of Chowkidars from different parts of India will interact in the historic programme.  This is an interaction you must not miss.  Watch it live on the NaMoApp or NaMo TV.”

Aam Aadmi Party and Congress complained to the Election Commission against the channel asking how it was launched after the Moral Code of Conduct came into force. They are alleging that the channel has been launched to push the BJP campaigns. However, denying all the allegations,  BJP’s Tom Vadakkan said,  “I don’t know the funding methodology but I have been speaking to people in the party who handle these matters and let me assure you that all payments are by cheque and everything is audited. It is all transparent.”

According to the sources, the I&B ministry is preparing a report to prove that NaMo is not ‘a normal Channel’ but an advertisement channel is run on certain DTH channels on payment made by the BJP.  The report further mentions that it is not on the list of permitted private satellite TV channels on the ministry’s website.

Well, this isn’t the first time when BJP has launched its own channel. n 2007, during state assembly election in Gujarat, the Modi led government had launched a channel called Vande Gujarat. And in 2012 elections, NaMo Tv was broadcasted.

However, it isn’t just BJP who plays the channel card. Earlier this year, Congress leader Kapil Sibal launched Tiranga TV.

On March 29, Tata Sky made a tweet, “Channel no 512 is NAMO TV, it is a Hindi news service which provides the latest breaking news on national politics.”

The tweet called NaMo TV a ‘Hindi News Service’ that initiated a controversy. The channel is available on most DTH platforms without a license and in possible violation of the poll code. However, the company later clarified that it is not a ‘Hindi News Service’ but a special service via the internet that does not need a government license.

Tata Sky CEO Harit Nagpal came out to clarify, “NaMo TV is not a Hindi News service. If someone in the frontline at Tata Sky has tweeted or said that it is a news service, it is a mistake.”

NaMo TV channel is added to all the subscribers as a launch offer. There is no option to delete the individual channel.

The Seven-phase elections will take place from April 11 to May 19. The counting of votes willbe done on May 23.
